Jaguar Land Rover North America sponsors U.S. Armed Forces Team for Invictus Games Orlando 2016

US Team Announcement_HERO_1355x460_tcm97-258754_desktop_1355x460Jaguar Land Rover North America is extending its support of the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida as lead sponsor of the U.S. Team, which will compete against 11 other nations’ teams in the multi-sport event for Wounded, Ill and Injured Service Members, May 8-12.

Jaguar Land Rover, presenting partner of the inaugural games in London 2014 and this year’s games in Orlando, will continue its commitment to the Games by renewing its role as sponsors of the UK team.

“Jaguar Land Rover is proud to back the U.S. armed forces teams to compete in the Invictus Games in Orlando this May,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, North America, LLC. “The men and women on the U.S. team, as well as those on the competing teams of other nations, represent the courage, determination and bravery of our armed forces, and we wish them the best of luck in Orlando.”

The Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for Wounded, Ill and Injured Service Members. Launched in 2014 by Prince Harry, the second edition of the Games will take place from May 8-12, 2016 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. Earlier this month, Prince Harry himself passed the Invictus Games Flag to U.S. team captain Will Reynolds at Buckingham Palace. That flag will tour the United States prior to the Games, making stops at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, the UK Embassy and White House in Washington, D.C. and more, before its final stop in Orlando.

“I am so proud to be leading the U.S. team in Orlando this year,” said Reynolds. “The Games celebrate the determination that each and every one of these competitors have shown in the face of true challenges.”

Reynolds will lead the US team of 115 athletes, competing across 10 sports. The rigorous selection process was based on the benefit the Invictus Games will give an individual as part of their recovery, combined with performance and commitment to training. The full U.S. team will begin training later this month in Tampa, Florida.

In addition to their partnership with both the Games and the U.S. and UK Teams, Jaguar Land Rover will also provide all competing nations with the first opportunity to win an Invictus Games 2016 medal through the Driving Challenge which takes place on May 7. Two team members from all 14 competing nations will take on the role of driver and navigator in the two time-trials which make up the challenge. Each pair will compete in both the Jaguar XE and Land Rover Discovery Sport, testing their communication, team-work and strategic planning skills.

Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to the Armed Forces and Veteran community was further extended last week as details of the new Jaguar Land Rover CALIBRE Partnership were announced. This collaboration will fund the training and hiring of 180 U.S. Service Members this year across North American retailers, and follows the recruitment of over 200 Transitioning Service Members, Veterans, and currently serving members of the National Guard and Reserve in the UK since 2013.

The Invictus Games are the only international adaptive sporting event for Wounded, Ill, and Injured WII Service Members, both serving and veteran. The inaugural Invictus Games, held in London in September 2014, saw over 400 competitors from 13 nations compete in nine sports. Invictus Games Orlando 2016 will see 500 competitors from 14 nations compete in 10 sports including Athletics; Archery; Indoor Rowing; Powerlifting; Road Cycling; Sitting Volleyball; Swimming; Track and Field; Wheelchair Basketball; Wheelchair Rugby, and a new sport for 2016, Wheelchair Tennis.

Jaguar Orlando is proud of Jaguar Land Rover’s steadfast commitment to these Invictus Games and to our global family of Armed Forces and Veterans!

Jaguar fires up jet pack with eye on world record

JAGUAR_XE_GRAHAM-BELL_01-1024x683British automaker Jaguar is taking its aerodynamic expertise onto the slopes with the help of Olympic skier Graham Bell.

The Olympian and automotive brand have announced a technical partnership with the goal of setting a Guinness World Record for fastest downhill ski speed, currently held by Italian speed skier Simone Origone. Emphasizing principles of design and speed in other fields builds the Jaguar brand in an organic and unobtrusive manner.

“As engineering challenges go it doesn’t get more unique than this, so the next few months are going to be very exciting,” said Ian Anderton, thermal and aerodynamics manager at Jaguar Land Rover. “In many ways, it’s very similar to the car design process, necessitating the perfect balance between aerodynamics, engineering and design for ultimate performance.”

Downhill edge
Mr. Bell participated in five Winter Olympics from 1984 to 1998 and now hosts the British TV show “The Jump,” in which celebrities partake in a variety of winter sports. Working with Jaguar, he hopes to exceed 160 mph, well above Mr. Origone’s 156 mph record.

Jaguar is developing a ski suit and harness that contains twin micro jets. The Jaguar XE is being used as a model for its aluminum-intensive body structure, which makes it lighter, stiffer and more aerodynamic than any other Jaguar.

In a statement, Mr. Bell said, “I approached Jaguar to become my lead technical partner due to their experience in aerodynamics and love of all things involving speed. As lead technical partner in the attempt, Jaguar will provide the aerodynamic expertise to develop the Iron-Man-style suit I need, as well as helping me acclimatize to speed and external forces using high performance vehicles including the Jaguar XE AWD – designed to provide maximum traction in adverse conditions including snow and ice.”

The two partners have already begun training in the Austrian Alps. Mr. Bell has skijored, a winter sport in which a skier is pulled by an animal or motor vehicle, behind a Jaguar XE traveling over 100 mph.

The tests help determine what factors, such as wind chill and skiing position, need to be considered when designing the ski suit. The actual record attempt will take place early next year in Jaguar’s cold weather testing facility in Sweden.

To help promote the partnership, Jaguar has shared a training film of the skijoring on social media platforms.

The video begins with shots of the Austrian Alps and Mr. Bell suiting up and stepping into his skis. Mr. Anderton echoes the difficulty of the challenge but notes, “We are best placed, in terms of our technical capabilities, to be the ones who do it, though.”

Bell then discloses his strategy: to reduce the amount of fuel – and thus weight – he has to carry, he will let the XE bring his speed up as high as possible, then disconnect from the vehicle and activate the jet pack to put him over the hump and claim the record.

“Extreme” stunts often have a broader appeal than specialized sporting activities because of the thrills and dangers associated with them. By sharing the video on social media, Jaguar can draw the attention of consumers who may not initially be interested in a skiing activity.

Moreover, the placement of the XE in the Alps discreetly promotes the vehicle’s handling and bad-weather capabilities. Making itself a design and speed force in other racing and sporting events reinforces Jaguar’s brand values.

Off to the races
Jaguar’s sister brand has also looked to other forms of racing to prove its design and speed prowess.

British automaker Land Rover is also using its technological proficiency to conquer the seas.

For the first race of the America’s Cup, sometimes referred to as “Formula 1 on water,” Land Rover will participate in the race with a multihull catamaran going by the name R1. Land Rover frequently puts design and tech at the forefront of its marketing, but taking to the sea will solidify those values and possibly bring the brand to a new market segment.

Jaguar Orlando will post more about this exciting engineering challenge as information becomes available.

On the Road with the Family this Summer

Any big trips planned with the kid(s) this summer? If you are in the car for more than an hour, it can seem like eternity with a bored nagging child. There are so many ways to have fun, learn something and make it to your destination in one piece. travel_main_photo9p4gzymqdu88skgso4ooogggs6ylu316ao144c8c4woosog48wth

Individual Activities
Toddlers
A great way to keep toddlers entertained is to purchase four or five new, inexpensive toys, wrap the toys like gifts, and give kids one to open every half-hour or hour. Kids love to unwrap presents, and not only will the unwrapping keep them entertained, they will also have something new to play with in the car. Some good toys to buy beforehand are crayons and coloring books, flash cards, or small puzzles that can be worked on a lap desk. These can also be used as rewards for being good in the car.

Preschoolers
For preschoolers, bring Play-Doh and a workable surface, such as a lap desk or large book covered in waxed paper. Challenge kids to think of things they might see on the trip (palm trees, fish, Grandma’s dog) and create those things with Play-Doh. Parents could have a contest for the best creation, supplying a “prize” for the best one. Play-Doh can be a bit messy, but it may be worth the cleanup time to keep kids happy in the car.
fun games for kids

Older Kids
A good idea for older kids is to buy a stack of crossword puzzles and word search books, playing cards, and comic books. Let them choose a few at a time, according to interest. Chapter books are always a good idea for kids who enjoy reading. They key is to buy something new specifically for the trip, so the interest level will be high.

DVDs and Video Games
This is a great option when the drive is not so scenic or it’s dark outside. If your Jaguar is not equipped with the rear seat entertainment options, you can set up the following:

  • Transform your Jaguar into the ultimate entertainment machine with the ultimate rear-seat entertainment system. Keep the kids engaged and the adults intrigued with this innovative system that lets your rear-seat passengers watch movies, play video games, listen to music and more. Call Jaguar Orlando to find out the options available for your Jaguar.
  • Buy or borrow a portable DVD Player. You can set up the DVD player on the middle console of the front seat or set on the child’s lap.  Makes sure to bring a variety of movies and videos.  You can get free copies from the library or a friend. And also think about videos that educate your children about your destination or fun exercises. They can be entertained and educated at the same time.

Family Activities
Individual activities are fun, but part of the pleasure of a long car ride is the time spent together. Families today are so pressed for time, and often there is simply not enough time left over at the end of the day for bonding. Use travel time as a means of interacting and enjoying one another’s company.

Looking for a variation on the license plate game? Try playing the alphabet game instead. Challenge kids to find cars with model names that begin with A through Z. The only rule is that the cars must be found in alphabetical order. This is a fun game that could last for a while. Or start with naming an animal that starts with an “A” and have your kids take turns listing others for the rest of the letters of the alphabet. Establish a rule that you’ll skip over “Q” and “X”!CBR002559

Use the time together to reminisce about favorite family memories. Does anyone remember the time Aunt Lucy accidentally dyed her hair purple? Or how about the time the Christmas tree fell over in the middle of the night? Use the time together to laugh and bond.

Family Games

Make a scavenger hunt of the trip and list a few things they should watch for. Some suggestions: Owls, old tires on the side of the road, weird sculptures/ landmarks and a vintage car. Reward kids with their favorite snack once they’ve found them all.

  • Counting Cows Car Game What’s the best way to count cows?  With a COW-culator of course! Here’s how to play the countin’ cows timeless road trip game, and some funny cow jokes to tell while you play. Give prizes out when you hit a milestone number.
  • License Plate Game Give them a printable page to check off each state license plate sightings!
  • Play Cards!  Old Maid & Crazy 8′s How to play classic card games your kids will love.

Find the games that work for you!

Postcards
Have kids use the time to write postcards to friends and family members about the things they are seeing. This is a great way to share memories with others.

california-family-road-trip-pic-300x400

On the way to the destination, stop at gas stations in various cities and buy postcards. Kids can tell about the things they are seeing as they drive. Purchase postcards while on vacation and let kids write to grandparents and friends on the way home about what they saw. If friends and neighbors from home are going on vacation at the same time, kids can do a “postcard exchange” when they return home.

A little creativity and planning can cut down on the fighting and fussing and leave fond family memories of your time together — on the road and off. If you car looking for a new Jaguar that is more accommodating for the family and long road, come on in and we can give you options that fits your day-to-day and road trip needs.

Summer is Here – Getting Your Car Summer Ready?

pd_family_roadtrip_070710_mn

Summer brings up a lot of memories and many of them have been in your car. Big cross country family trip or an even short drive to the park, lake or ocean for a day of fun with family and friends. It doesn’t matter. Is your car ready for the heat?
You want to keep you memories full of the fun stuff – not being stuck on the side of the road.

Here are some helpful tips:

1.    Standard check-up: Your car has gotten through the winter and spring. You should be getting a maintenance check every six months to see how your car is humming – oil change, break check, tire pressure, etc. Most major car accidents on highways are caused by a blown tire. Take the time to get all the basics checked before you embark on the road. Jaguar of Orlando has great offers and discounts for all of you basic maintenance needs. Schedule your appointment online.simple-car-maintenance-tips

2. AC check-ups: Is your AC freon and air flowing at the level you need? The last thing you want to happen is have the AC out when it’s 90 degrees and 90%humidity. Yet, we typically wait until there’s a problem.  Get this checked during your maintenance check. There could easily not be a problem, but now you know and have the peace of mind. When you schedule your maintenance check, we can check your AC levels and performance. Request a check when you schedule your appointment.

3. Bugs, bugs, bugs: With the heat, brings the bugs. Have you ever been showered with a cloud of bugs into the windshield? Have you ever waited more than a few days to take off the layer of bug guts of your car and found out some of these guts are now permanent accessory to your paint job?  Here are some helpful tips on keeping those buggers off!

  • Wax every three months – this helps with all types of bugs and critters from sticking.
  • Wash often – You wash once a week. During love bug season, you wash two-three times.  Car care experts say drivers should remove love bugs from their car as quickly as possible.  The insects are slightly acidic and can burn into car paint if left on too long. If you don’t have time to wash, spray your hood immediately when you get home to get them off immediately.
  • Clear wrap protects – Road Wrap is a disposable film that is wrapped around your vehicle to protect it from bugs, rocks, and other items that can harm your vehicle’s paint.bug-on-car
  • Car bras are not a solution – There is a danger in using car bras as a love bug defense. The bad thing if bugs get on the bra and you don’t wash them off, it will restrict flow to your radiator and your car will run hot over time.
  • Bug Remover – there are numerous solutions out there that you can get online or at auto supply store that specialize in bug removal. These are great resources if you wash your own car.

4.    Keeping you and your car cool. Also, how do you keep your car cooler than a toaster oven. Here are some simple tips on keeping your car cooler during these killer temperatures.

  • Get window shade that covers your entire front window – Toyota offers a Heat Shield shade. Check with our parts department. Just make sure you invest in a shade that covers the window completely.
  • Park in the shade. Find a nice tree and walk a little farther.
  • Get your windows tinted – Having all your windows tinted will alleviate 40-50% of the heat. Check with our service department.
  • Crack the windows slightly. Doing this can help to ventilate your car instead of having steam or hot air build up in your car. The windows on your vehicle have the same effects of a green house.
  • Tilt your sunroof, but keep the sun blocker almost closed.
  • Window visors allow you to keep the windows open a crack. The crack will not leak during a rain storm. Check with our parts department.
  • Sunshades are transparent shades that you can attach to your car window by a suction cup. This will block about 75% of the sun.
  • Pour a bottle of water on the car just before getting in. It will drop the temperature of the car drastically.
  • Invest in a car cover. This also helps with protecting your car other elements dropping onto your car. Check with our parts department.
  • Remote start and open your windows and sunroof.
  • If you don’t have remote and are going to load the car, get the car started with the AC blowing and get windows rolled down to circulate the air.
  • Prevent the sun from ever hitting the sunroof glass directly by applying body color matched vinyl sticker on the exterior of your sunroof. Check with our parts department.family-road-trip
  • Travel only early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.
  • When you are not driving your car and if you are at home, you should park your car in a garage. Garage parking is always better than parking on the street or your driveway because it protects your car from sun and other weather elements. Parking in a garage will keep your car cool until you are ready to leave your house.

So where are you going this summer? We want to know! It’s all about having fun!
