Jaguar’s Innovative Ingenium Engine: Why was it Developed?

At Jaguar, we are always committed to developing new technology to improve our vehicles’ performance and driving experience. The Ingenium engine embodies this ethos and ensures our vehicles meet new Euro 6 emissions standards that come into effect on 1st September 2015.

A key feature of the Ingenium engine is its future-proofing. Having been developed from scratch by some of the world’s finest automotive engineers, the engine was designed without compromise and with one eye on tomorrow. As well as complying with EU legislation, the state-of-the-art engine can be adapted to integrate future technology advances and regulation changes.
Ingenium is also a prime example of Jaguar’s commitment to British engineering and manufacturing. We’ve been able to create 6,900 UK jobs at the Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing Centre and in the supply chain by bringing engine production in-house.

“Being configurable and flexible are the two key strands of Ingenium – it will be able to accept new advances in fuel, turbocharging, emissions, performance and electrification technologies when they are ready.” Ron Lee, Jaguar Land Rover Director of Powertrain Engineering.

The Ingenium engine is available in the Jaguar XE, F-PACE and XF. We’d love to show you all about how it works at Jaguar Orlando…ready for a test drive?

XFR-S Super-Jag to Debut in November

Around this time last year there were spy shots of a high-performance version of the XF sedan that Jaguar has been developing.  Now reports from the UK indicate that the 542-horsepower XFR-S could be ready as early as November.  With an eye on the 552hp BMW M5 and 549hp Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, the Jaguar XFR-S is expected to pick up where the 503hp XFR leaves off by incorporating the supercharged V8 engine from the XKR-S super-coupe.

Upgraded aero bits including bigger spoilers front and rear are also expected to come part of the package, along with larger rolling stock and (we would hope) enlarged brakes to help keep all that muscle in check.  Sources anticipate the XFR-S to be unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November before the year is out.

Summer is Here – Getting Your Car Summer Ready?

pd_family_roadtrip_070710_mn

Summer brings up a lot of memories and many of them have been in your car. Big cross country family trip or an even short drive to the park, lake or ocean for a day of fun with family and friends. It doesn’t matter. Is your car ready for the heat?
You want to keep you memories full of the fun stuff – not being stuck on the side of the road.

Here are some helpful tips:

1.    Standard check-up: Your car has gotten through the winter and spring. You should be getting a maintenance check every six months to see how your car is humming – oil change, break check, tire pressure, etc. Most major car accidents on highways are caused by a blown tire. Take the time to get all the basics checked before you embark on the road. Jaguar of Orlando has great offers and discounts for all of you basic maintenance needs. Schedule your appointment online.simple-car-maintenance-tips

2. AC check-ups: Is your AC freon and air flowing at the level you need? The last thing you want to happen is have the AC out when it’s 90 degrees and 90%humidity. Yet, we typically wait until there’s a problem.  Get this checked during your maintenance check. There could easily not be a problem, but now you know and have the peace of mind. When you schedule your maintenance check, we can check your AC levels and performance. Request a check when you schedule your appointment.

3. Bugs, bugs, bugs: With the heat, brings the bugs. Have you ever been showered with a cloud of bugs into the windshield? Have you ever waited more than a few days to take off the layer of bug guts of your car and found out some of these guts are now permanent accessory to your paint job?  Here are some helpful tips on keeping those buggers off!

  • Wax every three months – this helps with all types of bugs and critters from sticking.
  • Wash often – You wash once a week. During love bug season, you wash two-three times.  Car care experts say drivers should remove love bugs from their car as quickly as possible.  The insects are slightly acidic and can burn into car paint if left on too long. If you don’t have time to wash, spray your hood immediately when you get home to get them off immediately.
  • Clear wrap protects – Road Wrap is a disposable film that is wrapped around your vehicle to protect it from bugs, rocks, and other items that can harm your vehicle’s paint.bug-on-car
  • Car bras are not a solution – There is a danger in using car bras as a love bug defense. The bad thing if bugs get on the bra and you don’t wash them off, it will restrict flow to your radiator and your car will run hot over time.
  • Bug Remover – there are numerous solutions out there that you can get online or at auto supply store that specialize in bug removal. These are great resources if you wash your own car.

4.    Keeping you and your car cool. Also, how do you keep your car cooler than a toaster oven. Here are some simple tips on keeping your car cooler during these killer temperatures.

  • Get window shade that covers your entire front window – Toyota offers a Heat Shield shade. Check with our parts department. Just make sure you invest in a shade that covers the window completely.
  • Park in the shade. Find a nice tree and walk a little farther.
  • Get your windows tinted – Having all your windows tinted will alleviate 40-50% of the heat. Check with our service department.
  • Crack the windows slightly. Doing this can help to ventilate your car instead of having steam or hot air build up in your car. The windows on your vehicle have the same effects of a green house.
  • Tilt your sunroof, but keep the sun blocker almost closed.
  • Window visors allow you to keep the windows open a crack. The crack will not leak during a rain storm. Check with our parts department.
  • Sunshades are transparent shades that you can attach to your car window by a suction cup. This will block about 75% of the sun.
  • Pour a bottle of water on the car just before getting in. It will drop the temperature of the car drastically.
  • Invest in a car cover. This also helps with protecting your car other elements dropping onto your car. Check with our parts department.
  • Remote start and open your windows and sunroof.
  • If you don’t have remote and are going to load the car, get the car started with the AC blowing and get windows rolled down to circulate the air.
  • Prevent the sun from ever hitting the sunroof glass directly by applying body color matched vinyl sticker on the exterior of your sunroof. Check with our parts department.family-road-trip
  • Travel only early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.
  • When you are not driving your car and if you are at home, you should park your car in a garage. Garage parking is always better than parking on the street or your driveway because it protects your car from sun and other weather elements. Parking in a garage will keep your car cool until you are ready to leave your house.

So where are you going this summer? We want to know! It’s all about having fun!

Gas Prices Go Up Again: What to Do?

With the recent turmoil in the Middle East, we are hit again with aggressive fuel charges. The reality is fuel prices will continue to go up and down, and they will continue to rise. What do you do?

Fuel efficiency needs to come from all ends – manufacturers, dealers and drivers. Jaguar has been committed to fuel efficiency in more unique ways than most manufacturers. The XJ’s lightweight aluminum body construction is at the very core of Jaguar’s uncompromising focus on environmental responsibility. It’s a focus centered on using new materials that drive weight from its cars. It’s a focus on developing highly advanced engines that deliver remarkable efficiency and CO2 performance. And it’s a focus on improving Jaguar’s manufacturing processes to dramatically reduce energy use.

Ten years ago, Jaguar laid down a strategy for building more efficient cars with the development of a lightweight aluminum body structure. Advanced aluminum construction – based on aerospace methods - delivering a body with great strength and rigidity, but with dramatically reduced weight compared with steel. The result was the remarkable new XJ saloon in 2003 and the all-new XK sports car in 2006.

Everyone is not ready to go to a hybrid, so as a driver what can you do to support your wallet and the planet at the same time?

Here are some tips to help you reduce the amount of gas you use and getting the best gas mileage your car can deliver.

DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY

Drive Sensibly
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.safedriving_300x225

Observe the Speed Limit
While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon for gas. Observing the speed limit is also safer.

Remove Excess Weight
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

Avoid Excessive Idling
Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines.

Use Cruise Control
Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.

Use Overdrive Gears
When you use overdrive gearing, your car’s engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear.

KEEP YOUR CAR IN SHAPE

Keep Your Engine Properly Tuned
Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done.keep-your-car-in-shape

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Keep Tires Properly Inflated
You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer.

The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is usually found on a sticker in the driver’s side door jamb or the glove box and in your owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire’s sidewall.

Use the Recommended Grade of Motor Oil
You can improve your gas mileage by 1–2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage by 1–2 percent. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1–1.5 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says “Energy Conserving” on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Combining errands into one trip saves you time and money. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multipurpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm. Trip planning ensures that traveling is done when the engine is warmed-up and efficient, and it can reduce the distance you travel.

PLAN AND COMBINE TRIPS

Commuting

  • Stagger your work hours to avoid peak rush hours.
  • Drive your most fuel-efficient vehicle.
  • Consider telecommuting (working from home) if your employer permits it.plan-car-trips

Take advantage of carpools and ride-share programs. You can cut your weekly fuel costs in half and save wear on your car if you take turns driving with other commuters. Many urban areas allow vehicles with multiple passengers to use High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes which are typically less congested, further improving your fuel economy.

Traveling

A roof rack or carrier provides additional cargo space and may allow you to meet your needs with a smaller car. However, a loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5 percent. Reduce aerodynamic drag and improve your fuel economy by placing items inside the trunk whenever possible.

Avoid carrying unneeded items, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 lbs in the trunk reduces a typical car’s fuel economy by 1-2 percent.

XF – Best Executive Car Award

The Jaguar XF was crowned Best Executive Car for the fourth year running at the What Car? Awards, held in London.

“We’re delighted the XF has won this prestigious What Car? Award for the fourth year in succession,” said Geoff Cousins, Managing Director of Jaguar Cars UK. “In terms of sales, 2010 was the best ever year ever for the XF. Sales of the model were up 25 per cent in 2010 versus 2009, and that’s the third consecutive year of growth. The XF has been a resounding success since it was launched in 2008, and it’s great to have that recognised by the media. We have sold more than 100,000 examples of the XF worldwide and it continues to attract new customers to the brand.”

What Car’s Editor in Chief Steve Fowler commented: “This is the fourth year running the XF has won our best executive car award, and this year it has had to work harder than ever to beat its rivals.”

“We love everything about the XF: it looks fantastic, drives brilliantly and makes real financial sense, too.”

This fourth What Car? ‘Best Executive Car’ accolade takes the Jaguar XF’s tally of international awards to more than 80 since its launch. It is probably the most crowned luxury car around the world.

Elsewhere in the Jaguar range, the introduction of the all-new Jaguar XJ in 2010 has only built on the success of the Jaguar XF. It is a landmark, flagship executive car from the revitalised Jaguar brand. Already the Jaguar XJ has received more than 20 international honours including ‘Luxury Car of the Year’ from Top Gear (UK), ‘Best Luxury Car’ from China’s Auto News, ‘Annual Limousine King’ from Quattroroute (Italy), Automobile Magazine’s ’2011 Design of the Year’ and ‘Best Executive Sedan’ at the Bloomberg Awards (US).

Stop by Jaguar of Orlando and test drive the XJ to experience it for yourself.

Safety on the Long Road – Holiday Driving

AAA reports an estimated 33.8 million people travel during the last two weeks of December with more than 75 percent of those people driving. Estimates project an even higher number of travelers this year, causing our nation’s highways to be more congested than ever, in potentially bad weather. Follow these tips, get prepared, and stay safe during those long hours behind the wheel this holiday season.

Prepare your vehicle. Make sure it is maintained and in good shape. Check your tire pressure, oil, and coolant. Jaguar Orlando is here to get your Jaguar humming for the long haul and often brutal winter haul. Call us and set up an appointment. We’ll be happy to get you rolling.

Be prepared for winter driving. In some areas of the country, you are dealing with snow, ice and unplanned conditions that you might experience at home. Carry a snow scraper and brush, a flashlight, blankets, booster cables, and a shovel, and make sure you have flares or emergency triangles.

Check on road conditions and weather in advance. First check TCC for our own real-time traffic reports. You may also want to try the Federal Highway Administration’s site for traffic information and links to other traffic sites. Check the weather forecast before you go for the weather along major interstate highways.

Bring a cell phone(s) for emergencies, but don’t ever use hand-held cell phones while driving, and even if you have a hands-free cell phone, use it only when absolutely necessary. Leave the calling to passengers, or better yet, when you’ve pulled over somewhere off the highway. And make sure you have a phone charger to keep your phone ready.

Wear a seatbelt. Make sure that every occupant of your vehicle is properly wearing seatbelts, even if you are in a van or RV.

Take regular breaks. Stop at least once every two hours-more frequently if it’s snowing, as falling snow can have a hypnotic effect.

Don’t speed. Speeding to try to cut trip time is especially risky when highways are packed with holiday traffic. Police will be out in full force to enforce posted limits.

Don’t drink and drive! Watch out for other drunks on the road, and report any suspects to the police before they cause an accident. According to NHTSA data, more people are killed in accidents on holidays than any other time, and nearly half of the accidents involve drunk drivers.

Don’t binge. Drinking or eating too much over the weekend will leave you tired for the drive back. Safely stow food in the trunk, rather than in the car where it’s a distraction. Keep in mind that turkey contains a natural sedative, called L-tryptophan.

Cut distractions. Supply the kids with distractions so they don’t distract you. Traditional games like travel bingo tend to be a lot less annoying on a long trip than the sounds of a Buzz Lightyear doll and a Game Boy.

Finally, read TCC’s tips on Night Driving for more information. And get a sense of humor-if you’re driving more than six hours, you’re going to need it!

Happy holiday traveling!
