The ‘New Original’: Jaguar XKSS Makes World Debut in Los Angeles

jdx_xkss_pressrelease_940x500_tcm97-316802_desktop_940x500
The first genuine Jaguar XKSS to be built in almost 60 years was today given its world debut presentation at the Petersen Museum, Los Angeles by Jaguar Classic. The stunning XKSS, finished in Sherwood Green paint, has been created by the Jaguar Classic engineering team ahead of the production of nine cars for delivery to customers across the globe in 2017.

Often referred to as the world’s first supercar, the XKSS was originally made by Jaguar as a road-going conversion of the Le Mans-winning D-type, which was built from 1954 -1956. In 1957, nine cars earmarked for export to North America were lost in a fire at Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory in the British Midlands; meaning just 16 examples of XKSS were built.

Earlier this year Jaguar announced that its Classic division would build the nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select group of established collectors and customers. The new one-off XKSS presented in Los Angeles is the summation of 18 months of research and will be used as a blueprint from which the nine continuation cars are built.

The nine cars will be completely new, with period chassis numbers from the XKSS chassis log. All cars are now sold at a price in excess of £1million each ($1,240,964.04).

The XKSS is the second continuation car to be created by Jaguar, following on from the six Lightweight E-types that were built in 2014. This project helped the team learn to engineer cars that are faithful to the specifications to which they were built in period, and this knowledge has been enhanced in creating the ‘new original’ XKSS.

The XKSS unveiled in Los Angeles is a period correct continuation, built using a combination of original drawings from Jaguar’s archive and modern technology. The Jaguar Classic engineering team scanned several versions of the 1957 XKSS to help build a complete digital image of the car, from the body to chassis, and including all parts required.

The body of the XKSS is made from magnesium alloy, as it was in 1957, and because the original styling bucks do not exist, Jaguar Classic produced a new, bespoke styling buck based on the original bodies from the 1950s. The bodies of the nine new cars will be formed on this buck, using a traditional process called hand-wheeling.

Jaguar Classic’s expert engineers worked with the original frames and from there produced CAD to support build of the chassis. In partnership with the Classic team, frame maker Reynolds – famous for their 531 tubing – was briefed to craft bespoke new parts using imperial measurements, rather than metric. The frames are bronze welded in the same way as the period XKSS chassis tubing.

The continuation cars feature period specification four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes with a Plessey pump, and Dunlop tires with riveted two-piece magnesium alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet, the XKSS is supplied with a 262hp 3.4-liter straight six-cylinder Jaguar D-type engine. The engine features completely new cast iron blocks, new cast cylinder heads and three Weber DC03 carburetors.

Inside, the ‘new original’ XKSS features perfect recreations of the original Smiths gauges. Everything from the wood of the steering wheel, to the grain of the leather seats, through to the brass knobs on the XKSS dashboard, is precisely as it would have been in 1957.

Minor specification changes have been made only to improve driver and passenger safety. The fuel cell, for example, uses robust, modern materials to support throughput of modern fuels.

Customer vehicles will be hand-built beginning this year, and it is estimated that 10,000 man hours will go into building each of the new XKSS cars.

Kev Riches, Jaguar Classic Engineering Manager, said: “The XKSS is one of the most important cars in Jaguar’s history, and we are committed to making the ‘new original’ version absolutely faithful to the period car in every way.

“From the number, type and position of all the rivets used – there are more than 2,000 in total – to the Smiths gauges on the dashboard, everything is the same as the original cars, because that is the way it should be.”

Tim Hannig, Director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said: “The XKSS continuation program underlines the world-class expertise we have at Jaguar Land Rover Classic. We are committed to nurturing the passion and enthusiasm for Jaguar’s illustrious past by offering exceptional cars, services, parts and experiences.

“Jaguar Land Rover Classic is perfectly positioned to cater for this growing love for classics, with a new £7.5m global headquarters set to open in Coventry in 2017. We are looking forward to growing this business, supporting our existing customers and engaging with a whole new generation of global enthusiasts.”

Jaguar F-PACE Thrills Goodwood with Dramatic Two-Wheeled Ride!

Jag_FPACE_Goodwood_FoS_Image_240616_22_JNA_940x500_tcm97-275709_desktop_940x500The Jaguar F-PACE has put on another dramatic display of dynamic precision and control. After setting the Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest loop-the-loop at its launch last year, the very same record-breaking F-PACE and stunt driver Terry Grant have teamed up again for a thrilling drive at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

This time Grant piloted Jaguar’s first family sports car up the famous Goodwood hill on two wheels. As if that was not enough, professional freestyle motorbike stunt rider Lee Bowers was on board to add even more jeopardy to proceedings.

Bowers is no stranger to two wheels and swapped his saddle for the luxurious leather interior of Jaguar’s first performance crossover. As the F-PACE two-wheeled up the demanding course, Bowers climbed out of the passenger window to stand on the side of the Jaguar and salute the crowd, before climbing back inside ahead of the finishing line.

Terry Grant, legendary stunt driver, said: “When Jaguar gave me the opportunity to reunite with the F-PACE used to break the world’s largest loop record, I couldn’t say no. Its light, stiff aluminium body and precise controls make it the perfect wheelie vehicle, and it was great to have Lee Bowers along for company – even if he did climb out halfway through our run!”

Even for an expert of Grant’s calibre, the two-wheeled drive required hours of planning. Final preparations were completed at Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire just days ahead of the live event.

For the actual drive, spectators were left in no doubt about the identity of the Jaguar as #FPACE was emblazoned on both the roof and underside of the vehicle.

Jaguar’s first ever family sports car has become the manufacturer’s fastest-selling vehicle. In the first 10 months on sale more than 14,000 orders have been placed, with all 2,000 First Edition vehicles sold out.

The Jaguar F-PACE is Jaguar’s first performance crossover and its lightweight body structure comprises 80 per cent aluminum. It is the only aluminum-intensive design in its sector and is manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull Plant in the UK. The New Generation of Jaguar Models for 2016/2017

CC_16_6041_JNA-XE-Update_MAR16_W6-adjustWith the introduction of the all-new Jaguar F-PACE performance SUV and XE compact sports sedan in retailers this spring, Jaguar has fully realized its U.S. go-to-market strategy first announced in September of 2015.

The New Generation of Jaguar relies on a series of competitive go-to-market initiatives that stand to fundamentally transform the Jaguar business in the United States in 2016.

Expansion of the Jaguar Line-up
With the introduction of models that compete in both the largest and fastest growing segments of the premium automotive market – the XE compact sports sedan and F-PACE performance SUV, respectively – Jaguar stands to dramatically increase its sales in the U.S. As much as 50 percent of Jaguar sales could be derived from these two models alone. Together, the XE and F-PACE focus on the core of the luxury market and on a far wider range of potential customers than ever before.

Aggressive Pricing
All Jaguar models are priced such that their base prices are square in the middle of their respective competitive segments. This competitive value position is achieved through both high content standard equipment and new lower MSRP choices by model. As a result, when compared on a like-for-like basis against cars within a given segment, Jaguar models exhibit a significant savings over the majority of the competition and near parity elsewhere. The increased value builds on each of the products’ key strengths and comes alongside new available technologies such as Torque On-Demand All Wheel Drive [3], shared lightweight aluminum-intensive architectures, Jaguar InControl® infotainment features [4], electric power assisted steering, and soon, the introduction of diesel powertrain technology.

Peace of Mind Ownership Assurance
First introduced in late 2016, all new Jaguar models come standard with the peace of mind of a best-in-class ownership package [2] – Jaguar EliteCare – the highlights of which include a new vehicle limited warranty, complimentary scheduled maintenance, complimentary roadside assistance and a suite of connectivity services called Jaguar InControl® Remote & ProtectTM

Collectively, each of these steps extend the appeal of Jaguar in the U.S. and have the potential to position the company to become one of the fastest growing automotive manufacturers in the premium segment, if not the entire industry for the 2016 calendar year.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2017

Led by the introduction of two new models in May – the XE and F-PACE – positioned as entry points to the brand, for the first time in its 80 year history Jaguar has five vehicles within its line-up.

2017 Jaguar XE

The short overhangs, cab-rearward stance and low driving position on the XE underscore the car’s F-TYPE inspired performance characteristics. Following a limited global release outside of North America as a 2016 Model Year car, the XE has already garnered more than 40 awards for its design, packaging and driving dynamics.

The 2017 XE is available with three different engines in the U.S.; a choice to suit every need. There’s the powerful “35t,” featuring a 340hp V-6 pulled from the F-TYPE; the “25t,” a compact gasoline inline- [4] shared with other Jaguar Land Rover products, like the Evoque and Discovery Sport; and the “20d,” the brand’s first-ever diesel in North America, and the first of a new generation of “Ingenium” engines wholly designed, engineered and built by Jaguar Land Rover in the UK.

Starting prices are as follows:

Model – Engine – MSRP [1]
XE 25t – 2.0L Gasoline 240hp – From $34,900
XE 20d – 2.0L Diesel 180hp – From $36,400 [5]
XE 35t – 3.0L V6 SC 340hp – From $41,700

2017 Jaguar F-PACE

Sharing an aluminum intensive architecture with both the new XE and recently redesigned XF, means the first-ever SUV from Jaguar has at its heart the driving dynamics of a sport sedan, while sharing the versatility and all-season capability of a performance SUV; it’s the most practical sports car from Jaguar ever.

Jaguar Design Director, Ian Callum and his team embraced this ethos and incorporated key design features from the F-TYPE sports car into the exterior of the F-PACE; the shape of the tail light roundel, Jaguar trademark power bulge in the hood and sheet metal that wraps around the rear haunch of the car contribute to a sense of tension and performance that underscore the new car’s driving experience.

The 2017 F-PACE is available with three powertrain options – the 340hp “35t,” the 380hp “S,” and later this year, a 2.0L turbocharged inline- [4] “Ingenium” diesel, the “20d” – all routed through an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Starting prices are as follows:

Model – Engine – MSRP [1]
F-PACE 20d – 2.0L Diesel 180hp – From $40,990 [5]
F-PACE 35t – 3.0L V6 SC 340hp – From $42,390
F-PACE S – 3.0L V6 SC 380hp – From $56,700

2017 Jaguar XF

Following a full redesign for the 2016MY, the 2017 XF model line expands with a new entry price point added under the existing Premium trim level and an available “20d” diesel engine which lowers the starting price to just $47,450 [1].

The “Ingenium” diesel, shared with the XE and F-PACE, is the first diesel powertrain offered in the United States by Jaguar and the first of a new Ingenium family of engines to be introduced for the brand.

Designed, engineered and built wholly in-house by Jaguar Land Rover engineers, all Ingenium engines feature a configurable and flexible common architecture – the same bore, stroke, cylinder spacing and 500cc cylinder capacity – enabling maximum manufacturing efficiencies and the potential development of additional engine variants which meet future regulatory and competitive requirements at greater speed to market.

Applying learnings from the Land Rover V6 diesel programs for North America, the calibration of the Jaguar “20d” 180hp Ingenium diesel engine was optimized to the last detail to deliver truly outstanding throttle response, while being 50-state emissions legal.

The 2017 XF also receives a few minor design changes including a new rotary shifter treatment, four new wheel styles and the introduction of three new paint colors.

The new model structure includes 18 variants ranging from XF, XF Premium, XF Prestige and XF R-Sport for both 20d and 35t powertrains, and an additional 380hp XF S model, each of which are available as rear- or all-wheel drive. Starting prices are as follows:

Model – Engine – MSRP [1]
XF 20d – 2.0L Diesel 180hp – From $47,450 [5]
XF 35t – 3.0L V6 SC 340hp – From $50,490
XF S – 3.0L V6 SC 380hp – From $62,700

2017 Jaguar F-TYPE

For 2017, Jaguar takes its F-TYPE sports car to the next level with the introduction of the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR. The F-TYPE SVR is an all-weather supercar, the brand’s lightest, quickest and most powerful F-TYPE ever, and the first to wear the SVR badge.

Featuring functional enhancements to the chassis, driveline and aerodynamics, in coupe form the F-TYPE SVR is one of very few production cars able to achieve 200mph [6]; acceleration from 0-60 mph in both coupe and convertible versions takes just 3.5 seconds [6].

Additionally, all 17 Model Year F-TYPE convertible models also receive a reconfigured trunk which expands the useable space to 7.3-cu. ft.

Like the XF, a new entry trim level has also been added to the 2017 F-TYPE line-up. The model range now spans from the F-TYPE, up to F-TYPE Premium, F-TYPE S, F-TYPE R and the top level F-TYPE SVR. The new trim structure allows the F-TYPE to be more competitive in the luxury coupe/convertible market. Starting prices are as follows:

Model – Engine – MSRP [1]
F-TYPE – 3.0L V6 SC 340hp – From $61,400
F-TYPE Premium – 3.0L V6 SC 340hp – From $66,800
F-TYPE S – 3.0L V6 SC 380hp – From $79,100
F-TYPE R – 5.0L V8 SC 550hp – From $105,400
F-TYPE SVR – 5.0L V8 SC 575hp – From $125,950

JAGUAR ELITECARE

First launched in September of 2015, every new Jaguar comes standard with Jaguar EliteCare, a Best-in-Class ownership package [2] that includes a 5 years or 60,000 miles new vehicle limited warranty, complimentary scheduled maintenance, as well as a suite of connectivity services and roadside assistance.

MARKETING

The New Generation of Jaguar was kicked off on April 19 with a multi-faceted campaign called Master Plan, featuring Tom Hiddleston and Nicholas Holt, to drive awareness for the full line of Jaguar products, but with explicit focus on raising awareness for the two newest products, the XE and F-PACE.

Placed on major TV networks, in automotive publications and through online properties, the campaign targeted conquest customers and drove record online traffic to JaguarUSA.com as these vehicles went on sale. Following visits to the website, showroom traffic at retailers reached record levels as well, proving both the XE and F-PACE as compelling alternatives to the established competitors within their respective segments.

“THE ART OF PERFORMANCE” JAGUAR XE TEST DRIVE TOUR

To introduce the Jaguar XE compact sports sedan to a growing millennial consumer demographic who desire performance and seduction in their luxury vehicles, Jaguar launched “The Art of Performance Tour: Lights. Camera. Drive!” in Los Angeles, late last year. This seven-city cross-country tour continues in 2016 and invites consumers to see the full 2016/2017 Jaguar line-up, including the Jaguar F-PACE, and be among the first to drive the Jaguar XE.

The Tour incorporates a cinematic drive experience that celebrates Jaguar’s long standing relationship with the silver screen. During their visit, consumers have the opportunity to star in their own filmed action sequence behind the wheel of the XE, as they experience high performance driving on a closed course and on-road handling through a street drive. The personal film they leave with is sharable through popular social media pages, including Facebook. Consumers can sign up to receive more information about The Art of Performance by visiting JaguarUSA.com/RSVP.

Jaguar Land Rover North America sponsors U.S. Armed Forces Team for Invictus Games Orlando 2016

US Team Announcement_HERO_1355x460_tcm97-258754_desktop_1355x460Jaguar Land Rover North America is extending its support of the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida as lead sponsor of the U.S. Team, which will compete against 11 other nations’ teams in the multi-sport event for Wounded, Ill and Injured Service Members, May 8-12.

Jaguar Land Rover, presenting partner of the inaugural games in London 2014 and this year’s games in Orlando, will continue its commitment to the Games by renewing its role as sponsors of the UK team.

“Jaguar Land Rover is proud to back the U.S. armed forces teams to compete in the Invictus Games in Orlando this May,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, North America, LLC. “The men and women on the U.S. team, as well as those on the competing teams of other nations, represent the courage, determination and bravery of our armed forces, and we wish them the best of luck in Orlando.”

The Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for Wounded, Ill and Injured Service Members. Launched in 2014 by Prince Harry, the second edition of the Games will take place from May 8-12, 2016 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. Earlier this month, Prince Harry himself passed the Invictus Games Flag to U.S. team captain Will Reynolds at Buckingham Palace. That flag will tour the United States prior to the Games, making stops at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, the UK Embassy and White House in Washington, D.C. and more, before its final stop in Orlando.

“I am so proud to be leading the U.S. team in Orlando this year,” said Reynolds. “The Games celebrate the determination that each and every one of these competitors have shown in the face of true challenges.”

Reynolds will lead the US team of 115 athletes, competing across 10 sports. The rigorous selection process was based on the benefit the Invictus Games will give an individual as part of their recovery, combined with performance and commitment to training. The full U.S. team will begin training later this month in Tampa, Florida.

In addition to their partnership with both the Games and the U.S. and UK Teams, Jaguar Land Rover will also provide all competing nations with the first opportunity to win an Invictus Games 2016 medal through the Driving Challenge which takes place on May 7. Two team members from all 14 competing nations will take on the role of driver and navigator in the two time-trials which make up the challenge. Each pair will compete in both the Jaguar XE and Land Rover Discovery Sport, testing their communication, team-work and strategic planning skills.

Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to the Armed Forces and Veteran community was further extended last week as details of the new Jaguar Land Rover CALIBRE Partnership were announced. This collaboration will fund the training and hiring of 180 U.S. Service Members this year across North American retailers, and follows the recruitment of over 200 Transitioning Service Members, Veterans, and currently serving members of the National Guard and Reserve in the UK since 2013.

The Invictus Games are the only international adaptive sporting event for Wounded, Ill, and Injured WII Service Members, both serving and veteran. The inaugural Invictus Games, held in London in September 2014, saw over 400 competitors from 13 nations compete in nine sports. Invictus Games Orlando 2016 will see 500 competitors from 14 nations compete in 10 sports including Athletics; Archery; Indoor Rowing; Powerlifting; Road Cycling; Sitting Volleyball; Swimming; Track and Field; Wheelchair Basketball; Wheelchair Rugby, and a new sport for 2016, Wheelchair Tennis.

Jaguar Returns to Racing

FE-CAR3_1355x460_tcm97-231817_desktop_1355x460

Jaguar today announced its return to global motorsport. In the autumn of 2016, Jaguar will enter the third season of the exciting FIA Formula E Championship as a manufacturer with its own team. FIA Formula E is the world’s first global single-seater championship for electric powered cars.

FIA Formula E offers a unique opportunity for Jaguar Land Rover to further the development of future EV powertrain including motor and battery technology.

Nick Rogers, Group Engineering Director for Jaguar Land Rover, said, “I am proud to announce Jaguar’s return to racing with an entry into the innovative FIA Formula E championship. Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover’s future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies. The Championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions.

It is my belief that over the next five years we will see more changes in the automotive world than in the last three decades. The future is about being more connected and more sustainable; electrification and lightweight technologies are becoming more important than ever as urbanisation continues to increase. Formula E has recognised and reacted to these trends and the championship’s exciting and pioneering approach is the perfect fit for our brand.”

Jaguar Land Rover employs over 8,000 engineers and is the UK’s largest investor in research and development across any business sector. Jaguar’s Formula E team will be able to draw upon this industry leading resource with Jaguar Land Rover engineers working closely with the race operations team.

Those engineers will not only be able to apply their knowledge within the race team environment but crucially use the experience to extract data and push the boundaries of electric technology in a performance environment.

Williams Advanced Engineering will be Technical Partner to the Jaguar Formula E Team and provide extensive motorsport knowledge, combined with high performance EV Systems experience and success. Jaguar Land Rover has a long term relationship with Williams, who partnered with Jaguar on the development of the Jaguar C-X75 plug-in hybrid concept car. The team entry has been granted by Formula E and approved by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

Alejandro Agag, Chief Executive Officer for Formula E, said, “We are delighted to welcome Jaguar into Formula E. Jaguar is a brand with a rich sporting heritage and the fact that it is returning to global motorsport with Formula E is a huge endorsement of the championship and its ability to influence the development of electric cars. Jaguar brings with it a passionate fan base that will drive the popularity of the championship across the world and once again shows that Formula E is the future of motorsport.”

Jean Todt, President of the FIA said, “The FIA is pleased to welcome Jaguar as a new manufacturer to enter the FIA Formula E Championship. We built this series to offer an alternative competition for manufacturers to step into the sport and develop road-relevant electric technologies. The choice of Jaguar to come back to motor racing with Formula E is a proof of success. As it forges a path forward for the future of the electric car, Formula E managed to attract one of the most prestigious and historical brand across the automotive industry. I wish them success ahead of their arrival in 2016/2017”.

James Barclay, Jaguar Team Director, said, “We looked in detail at alternative ways of returning to motorsport. This was such an important decision for Jaguar and we wanted to get it right. With our future EV plans, Formula E was the obvious choice and we believe that the benefits are enormous. The FIA and the promoter have exciting plans for the future of the championship and we are proud to be one of the first vehicle manufacturers to commit to the series with our own team. We have a lot of work to do ahead of the first race but it is a challenge we relish. We hope that we can welcome a new generation of fans to Jaguar through this exciting program.”

We’ll post updates, as they become available, to our blog and social media. And view our entire Jaguar selection at Jaguar Orlando!

Jaguar piques consumer interest in new F-Pace crossover with public preview

Team-Sky-Tour-De-France

British automaker Jaguar is giving consumers a brief look at its upcoming F-Pace model through a partnership with the Tour de France.

Set to debut officially at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the F-Pace briefly came out in public on July 4 in front of crowds in Utrecht, Netherlands to support Team Sky during the first stage of the race. While this appearance gives some hints as to the model’s design, the special covering created for the event may help to keep details under wraps until the big reveal.

“Launching the first look of the Jaguar F Pace at the Tour de France was truly a genius move as this is a world-class event that is watched over many days by many viewers around the world,” said Lauren Fix, automotive expert, Lancaster, NY.

“There is plenty of focus on the riders as well as the vehicles that support them, a great opportunity for many people both in the region and on TV to see the Jaguar a logo on the first SUV,” she said.

“After multiple days of national television and multimedia exposure for Jaguar, I am sure that they will find other additional ways to present the Jaguar F type to multiple different audiences that are potential purchasers prior to the Frankfurt auto show review.”

Road test
Jaguar’s F-Pace is a performance crossover SUV, which is based on the C-X17 concept car shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The car’s design blends the sports car look of the F-Type on the aluminum exterior with a functional five-seat interior, making it a good potential family vehicle.

This new model broke its silence, appearing in front of a live audience of approximately 1 million and the additional 2 billion watching on television.

During the Grand Depart, the vehicle supported the five Team Sky riders–Ian Stannard, Luke Rowe, Peter Kennaugh, Leopold König and Chris Froome. The automaker carried two of the team’s Pinarello Bolide Time Trial bikes on a special rack created for the stage, which included a telescopic clamp engineered by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations.

As the riders were being tested, Jaguar’s first crossover was also having its first run in the real world on a large stage.

Jaguar created a social video to capture the importance of its role in the race and show off the F-Pace to a larger audience.

In the film, Mr. Froome pedals alone with a Jaguar trailing him on a foggy road. He says, “As a rider, it’s crucial for us to have the best bikes possible, so for our support staff, it’s crucial for them to have the best vehicles to be able to give us that support we need. And Jaguar absolutely provide that for us.”

The music swells, and the bicyclist speeds past crowds of people gathered on the side of the road, a smile on his face. His trusted support team rides right behind in the Jaguar.

Rather than the previous hard camouflage used on the F-Pace, for this trip the vehicle wore only a skin, making the design partly visible to onlookers.

In a brand statement, Team Sky head of technical operations and commercial Carsten Jeppesen said: “The atmosphere in Utrecht was incredible. The Netherlands has a huge passion for cycling and right from the moment we arrived at the start line, you could feel the excitement. The appearance of Jaguar’s F-Pace prototype definitely added to the hype today – you could see it made a big impact with the crowds.”

The F-Pace will go on sale at Jaguar Orlando in 2016.

Big reveal
Team Sky has figured in other Jaguar efforts, as the automaker compares its own techniques to that of the cyclists.

The automaker brought in a Team Sky executive to discuss “marginal gains” – a concept that directed the British cycling team to success – to translate it into automobile design and performance.

Jaguar and Team Sky have previously relied on one another’s expertise to bring insights from automobiles and bikes together. This unique partnership allows Jaguar to create a longstanding relationship with some of Britain’s best athletes, aligning its vehicles with the performance and technique of world renowned cyclists.

“Luxury brands tease,” said Chris Ramey, president of Affluent Insights, Miami, FL. “Being found where you’re least expected has always been a luxury strategy. Wheels Up on the pants of the Triple Crown winning jockey and Hublot on the boxing shorts of Floyd Meriwether are other recent examples.

“Brand ubiquity is increasingly important for brand building,” he said. “To pass unnoticed without fanfare is a sophisticated marketing strategy. True luxury often has a James Bond-like quality, recognized only by the cognoscenti. It’s as if Jaguar is tipping its hat to those who know, without caring about the others.

“Calling attention to oneself is increasingly a mass/premium market strategy. Flashing is the art of seduction. Reveals come in due time. Both create their own special type of desire.”

Jaguar Partners with Design Schools to Envision Future Jaguar Sports Car

PRIVATE - 2015 JAGUAR DESIGN WEEK - PASADENA - RAWSOn May 22, 2015, Jaguar announced its partnership with two premier U.S. design colleges, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. Student participants in the program will have the opportunity to work on Jaguar design briefs to create a 2030+ model year concept vision halo sports car and 2+2 sports coupe four-door interior. The design briefs were created by the Jaguar Design team who will interact with students throughout the semester and ultimately judge the students’ work.

Taking place over the summer semester, the design program will last a total of 12 weeks from start to finish while students transform concept sketches to scale models, both in digital and in clay form. During this time period the students and instructors will work closely with Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director, and his team on all elements from inspiration, concept sketches to final design approvals, providing an experience as if in an actual global manufacturing design studio.

When the semester ends in August, students will present their final concepts to the Jaguar Design team who, with school faculty, will select the most successful designs.

“Partnering with Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design and San Francisco’s Academy of Art University will be an exceptional design experience for both the students and Jaguar,” said Callum. “The program will provide unique insight for both design schools and Jaguar as to what performance and luxury may look and feel like in the future.”

Art Center College of Design is a world renowned school noted for its Transportation Design program that started more than 80 years ago. Today, graduates of the college are influencing decisions at the majority of the world’s automotive design studios. Under the direction of the Jaguar Design team, Art Center students will undertake a dream creative brief assignment – to design an iconic gasoline powered sports car. Focusing on design language, sculpture and proportion, students will explore future design philosophies for Jaguar that prioritizes form and visual identity. Both interior and exterior concepts will be created in physical and digital form, utilizing the latest in technology and practices.

Founded in 1929 and located in San Francisco, California, Academy of Art University is the largest private Art and Design school in the country with over 17,000 students enrolled. Academy of Art University’s industrial design department was established in 1992, followed by the addition of the transportation design major in 1998. The University’s open enrollment policy offers greater opportunities for students to enter art and design fields and discover their true calling. The Academy of Art University in San Francisco will work collectively between two design briefs. The first is to develop an interior environment for halo sports car. The second is to push opulence into new territory by creating an interior cabin for a 2+2 seat configuration in a large sport coupe four-door. Design teams will be composed of individuals from four design disciplines: industrial designer, color and materials designer, human machine interface designer and a digital modeling designer. The Academy of Art program will also benefit from Jaguar Land Rover’s Portland facility where cutting edge technology and groundbreaking interface design are cultivated.

E-Type Takes Over Amelia Island

Jaguar has an historic E-Types good show at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in Florida this weekend.

Among the cars that were shown as part of the 50th anniversary of the E-Type, as described by Jag:

  • Group 44 Series III V-12 E-Type. The Group 44 team campaigned this Series III E-Type in the “B” Production class of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National events. A Divisional champion in 1974, it went on to capture the SCCA’s BP National Championship in 1975. A part of the permanent collection of the Jaguar Heritage Museum, the V-12 E-Type will return after its brief stay in the U.S. to the United Kingdom to participate in this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
  • Cunningham E-Type Coupe. In 1962, the eponymous team of Briggs Cunningham entered this production-based Series I E-Type Fixed Head coupe at the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans. Though prepared by the Jaguar factory, the car was built up from mostly production parts, unlike the subsequent “Lightweight” E-Type Roadsters that followed. Though out gunned by the factory-entered Ferraris, the venerable XK-engined car finished fourth overall, averaging 108.82 mph covering nearly 2,611 miles in the process. The car is a permanent part of the privately held Collier Collection of Naples, Fla.

Also on display at “The Amelia” will be a selection of cars from Jaguar’s 2011 model lineup. At least these can be driven:

The E-Type made its debut in 1961. In the U.S., it was the XK-E. That’s a ’61 E-Type in the photo, above.

“Jaguar’s spirit of innovation and breakthrough design, so clearly expressed in the E-Type, is still alive today, and is a defining essence of the new Jaguar lineup, led by the award winning new XJ luxury sedan,” said Gary Temple, president of Jaguar Land Rover North America.
