Stirling Moss Recreates History in Jaguar C-Type at Mille Miglia

Along with co-driver Norman Dewis, the legendary driver celebrated the 60th anniversary of the 1952 race.

Sixty years after tackling the 1952 Mille Miglia in a C-type Jag equipped with a prototype disc-brake system, Sir Stirling Moss and co-driver Norman Dewis recreated history at the 2012 event. Chassis XKC 005 was the same car that Sir Stirling Moss drove to victory in Reims, and in so doing became the first ever competition win for a disc-braked car. After completing a parade lap around Brescia to start this year’s Mille Miglia, Moss said: “The disc-brakes were incredible.”

“Whereas the Ferrari and Mercedes could all brake once pretty well and then overheat, the Jaguar could repeatedly stop later and faster over and over again, and the Mille Miglia was the ultimate real world test. It was a joint idea between the team – where could we go, on the road, at racing speeds over a thousand miles – and we said if it can do this, then we will have a production brake that we can make available. “The C-type later joined the other five Jaguar Heritage Racing entries to take the start of the event. These included two more C-types, a Mk VII saloon, and a pair of XK 120 models, one a roadster the other a fixed-head example.

Jaguar XKX Concept Study Revives E-Type for 21st Century

An electric roadster blends classic lines with modern aerodynamics and cutting-edge energy feedback.

The idea behind this particular design study was to revive the timeless lines of the stunning E-type of the 1960s while integrating new aerodynamics tailored around an electric powerplant. As an EV, the small dimensions of the engine and flexibility of the battery’s placement meant the designer could concentrate on creating improved aerodynamics. Widening the side deflectors on the front intakes means air can flow behind the front wheels.

It can then slide along the doors, make a shortcut through the rear wheels and out from the huge rear openings. The result is a reduction in the total flow path and subsequent drag. Visually, the leaping jaguar logo has inspired the side profile, while up front the headlights have been shaped to give the car a look of an aggressive feline ready to pounce. Notable features on the concept include side mirrors that disappear into the body when the car is stopped and unfold once it turns on, and the regenerative power system.

As almost 60 percent of energy used by a car at highway speeds is spent countering air friction, the body of the Jaguar XKX concept is covered by a layer housing microscopic ripples of piezoelectric cells. When air flows over them, the pressure created produces electricity that is fed to the vehicle’s battery

Jaguar Design Chief Wants a Supermini

British brand is hard at work expanding its lineup. In order to better compete with the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, Jaguar will look to expand its current lineup with a high-performance Mini-rivaling city car. Speaking with What Car?, the brand’s head of design, Ian Callum said: “There is hardly anything we haven’t looked at as a potential Jaguar product. I have mentioned supermini and that is my personal soapbox, internally and externally. I’d love to think that one day we could make something the size of a Mini.”

He went on to say that although a supermini was his preferred option, it would be hard to make a business case for it. Jaguar recognizes the need for it to expand in order to compete and other projects it could pursue include an X-type replacement to rival the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, while they are also working on an aluminum-bodied crossover. “We understand that we need to increase our portfolio. Not just from a business point of view, but we also need to get our brand more visible,” Callum told the British automotive magazine.
